Overview
Custom Tokens are used to personalize your outreach to candidates. They are variables that you can insert anywhere into your Sequence Stages, Campaigns, or Application Review to help customize them. We pull these variables from the Candidate Info and Your Custom Tokens fields within a candidate's profile in Gem.
For example, rather than saying "Hi there!" at the beginning of every message, you could say "Hi #{{first_name}}!" instead. As long as the candidate has their first name field filled out within Gem, the message they will receive will be personalized with their name (ex. "Hi Bob!").
How it works
Sequences
All of your available Custom Tokens for Sequences can be found in your Sequence Stage editing window, right on top of the Subject line field.
Sequence Tokens can be inserted anywhere into the Subject or Body of your Sequence Stages. Simply use your mouse cursor to select where you would like the Sequence Token to be placed, then click on the Sequence Token to insert it.
Campaigns
All of your available Custom Tokens for Campaigns can be found in your Campaign editing window by selecting any Header or Text tool and clicking the “Custom tokens” dropdown.
Application Review
All of your available Custom Tokens for Application Review can be found in the customization tab of Team Settings.
Tokens can be inserted anywhere into the Subject or Body of your message. Simply use your mouse cursor to select where you would like the token to be placed, then click on the token to insert it. We recommend referencing the job and your company name in each message so the message is clear to the recipient.

Things to note:
-
If you decide to use a particular Custom Token and the candidate does not have that information field filled out on their Gem profile, they will see a blank space in their message. For example, if you said, "I noticed that you've worked at #{{company}} in the past." and their Company field is empty, your message will look something like: "I noticed that you've worked at in the past." To prevent this, use Token Fallbacks. More information on this here.
-
When editing/previewing, your Custom Tokens will populate with the candidate's information or your Custom Field Tokens, with exception to the Day of Week token. More information on this here.
